Is it better to buy software that is completely configurable to our needs or buy one that is a pre-configured solution?

Configuring your own software can provide the company with exactly what they want. However, software requires constant attention and "maintenance" and a compnay must assign people to this task. Many times engineers get involved in the upfront configuration and installation but are not available to keep the system up and running as times change. A package approach that is ready to go out of the box but with "program controls" to tailor the software might provide a more solid approach to sustainability.
